First thing to do is cut off the bottom inch or so of the stem, so that new fresh wood is showing. Then immediately put the tree in warm water. keep your tree as far away from any heat sourse as possible, the cooler the better, Perhaps in front of a window if you are in an older home. fill up the reservoir every day, or more if needed.
By a window so it can get some sunlight. Also add in with the water 7UP. I read somewhere that it keeps it alive longer and we tried it last year and it works!
Put it out of the way of traffic through the room, so you don’t accidentally knock it over.
Put it away from any heaters or heat registers, so it doesn’t dry out. Or at least close the vents, and seal them shut with ductape or something similar.
You can put it in front of a window if you want, but you’ll usually have a heat register there.
Unless you have a GREAT stand for it, put it someplace where you can tie a string to it to keep it from tipping over. Window curtain rods work well for this, and fishing line is almost invisible most of the time.
